Ebook About “To truly understand the United States, one must understand The Not-Quite States of America.” —Mark Stein, best-selling author of How the States Got Their ShapesEveryone knows that America is 50 states and… some other stuff. The U.S. territories—American Samoa, Guam, Puerto Rico, the Northern Mariana Islands, and the U.S. Virgin Islands—and their 4 million people are little known and often forgotten, so Doug Mack set out on a 30,000-mile journey to learn about them. How did they come to be part of the United States? What are they like today? And why aren’t they states? Deeply researched and richly reported, The Not-Quite States of America is an entertaining and unprecedented account of the territories’ crucial yet overlooked place in the American story.Book The Not-Quite States of America: Dispatches from the Territories and Other Far-Flung Outposts of the USA Review :
As a Puertorriqueña I really appreciate that we finally have a book about the territories. Thank Doug for letting people know that there are more American citizens with a lot to offer to the Union spread in islands in both sides of the world. This book should be splashed all over the news for its relevance to current events. Students should read it. People on cruise ships should read it. Elected officials should read it. And anyone who appreciates good writing and a good story should read it. The quality of the writing together with interesting history, plenty of interaction with locals, and fascinating facts and figures (as mentioned by other reviewers) combine to make learning about the U.S. territories fun. To be sure, this book was written prior to the events of recent months; they are not included within its pages. But suddenly the importance of these far-flung islands has come to the forefront as North Korea threatens Guam, Hurricane Irma devastates the U.S. Virgin Islands, and Puerto Rico struggles with economic issues as well as a recent vote in favor of statehood. As you read about each of these recent news events you will surely think to yourself--Guam? Oh yes, there is a military base there. Wasn't it important in World War II? You will think about the U.S. Virgin Islands and think---oh, yes, isn't that where our cruise ship pulled into for a few hours, where we loved the white sand and clear water? But I wish I knew more! You will read about Puerto Rico's vote in favor of statehood, or its struggle with bankruptcy and think--oh, yes, what about Puerto Rico? For a good overview of the territories and their people, and for a fun travelogue featuring little-known facts, try this book. It was a fun read a few months ago. Now it is more relevant than ever.
